Questionnaire - Emptying, Cleaning and Disinfection of bedpans and urinals

Questionnaire

Emptying, Cleaning and Disinfection of bedpans and urinals

The role of washer disinfectors for bedpans (human waste containers)

Introduction

Bedpans are frequently used items in healthcare. Insufficient cleaned bedpans and urinals cause a risk for developing

healthcare associated infections for patients and healthcare workers. There is a risk of contamination of hands and

environment and transmission pathogens by manual emptying, manual cleaning and manual disinfection of bedpans

and urinals.

For a long time I am interested in this item. In 1990 I won the 1st Dutch Infection Prevention Award with a survey about

findings and solutions of the correct use of emptying, cleaning and disinfection of washer disinfectors (WD) for

bedpans (human waste containers).I looked for the following items for my survey in 1990:

· Emptying of the content after use of bedpans urinals and other waste containers.

· Efficiency of the cleaning process of the WD for bedpans

· Monitoring of the thermal disinfection (minimal 1 minute 80°C/ 176 ° F)

· If all the bedpans and urinals are dry or that they needed manual drying

· Correct loading of the washer disinfectors for bedpans

· Condition (visual and technical) of the WD for bedpans

· Storage of clean and non clean items in the sluice room/dirty utility room

· Validation of the WD for bedpans

· Regular maintenance of the WD for bedpans

· Regular cleaning of the WD for bedpans

· Responsibility of the WD for bedpans

Reason for this survey

In the Netherlands like in many other countries we use washer disinfectors for bedpans and urinals. Washer

disinfectors for bedpans need maintenance and validation to achieve temperature control, cleaning control and

disinfection control. Trough my consulting I noticed a huge differentiation in the practice how to empty, clean and

disinfect the bedpans. It seems an ignored problem even we all know that the content of bedpans and urinals can be

heavenly contaminated with huge numbers of (multi drug resistant) organism. Conform the List of Spaulding (1968) the

bedpan needs low level disinfection because it is in contact with not intact skin or mucous membranes. That is one of

the reasons bedpans and urinals do not get the correct procedure for disinfection. I think every healthcare setting must

guarantee a safe product for the patient.

In 2010 I like to present a poster and write an article about the machinal or manual emptying, cleaning, disinfection and

drying of bedpans. To get more inside in the problem I like:

· to know if anything changed in the Netherlands in the last 20 years. (This survey will also be sent to my Dutch

colleagues to compare the results from 1990 and 2009)

· to know If colleagues from other parts in the world are sharing the same problems.

The results will be never traced to any healthcare setting or to a person.

· Please use separate forms for hospital or/and nursing homes.

· The results will be presented in a poster and if possible published

· This form can be filled in digital and sent to my e-mail address

· This form may be also be printed and sent by post

· Please return the survey before 6 March 2010

I realize that answering these questions will cost you extra time

But I hope I will have a huge response.
